How to use polyester strapping
Safety is #1 concern for companies switching from steel strapping into polyester strapping.
Steel strapping can have very sharp edges, resulting in stitches or worse! But is Polyester strapping safer? Most companies are saying YES. Poly strapping has safe edges, and we do not know of a single cut that required stitches (theoretically it could happen). Most steel strapping injuries are from either: banding being cut off a compressible load, or loose strapping that has an edge sticking out. Plastic strapping (polyester, polypropylene, or nylon) has dull edges. Think of it like cutting with a plastic knife vs. a steak knife…
The best resource for buying poly strapping is http://www.allstrap.com/poly_strapping they have poly strapping tools, poly strapping machine, and of course, polyester strapping!
The down side to polyester strapping is the elongation (stretch). We are used to steel strapping not stretching at all, but poly strapping will stretch, and sometimes a lot! We notice skids that start perfectly square may lean, or bunks may loosen after they take a large impact. Polyester strapping is much safer if the stretching doesn’t not bother you!
